What is the main cause of skin allergy?

An allergic reaction is often seen in our daily life when a person have symptoms of itchy throat or skin after eating certain food like seafood or after being in a dusty room. Allergy is a reaction of the human body towards foreign substances that usually does not trigger excessive body response in other normal people. Allergic reaction is more than just itchy skin and swollen lips or face as it could be dangerous when it involves the respiratory system. It could be deadly when it becomes an anaphylactic shock. There are a number of medicines that help to treat such conditions such as Telfast 180 mg.

Generally speaking, an allergy is a reaction of the human body to foreign substances which, in general, does not lead to an excessive body response in other normal people. Allergens such as protein like egg and seafood, foreign substances suc as bee venom and pollen, are common;y reported to trigger allergic reactions in people with allergies. These are due to present of histamine.  Histamine, as a result of the body’s reaction, is a chemical in the body that is present in the bloodstream. Histamine is responsible for the allergic symptoms. Common symptoms of allergies include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes and hives. Other symptoms include stomach cramps and vomiting in some cases.

What exactly is skin allergy? It is a condition where the immune system reacts strongly to allergen and the skin causes symptoms such as irritated skin, swelling or hives. Symptoms may also be dry skin, skin with scales resulting from flaking skin and cracked skin. The main cause for skin allergy is the excess immune response. The cause behind the allergy depends on the allergens. In general, skin allergy is divided to a number of types:

  • Allergic contact dermatitis- caused by immune reaction towards allergens that are concentrated such as hair dye, rubber or perfumes.
  • Irritant contact dermatitis- skin allergy that can occur to anyone exposed to irritants with enough concentration such as detergent and organic solvents.
  • Eczema- also known as atopic dermatitis, common in those with family history of allergies.
  • Drug induced dermatitis- common drugs causing this are penicillin and cephalosporins.
  • Photosensitive dermatitis- exposure to the UV radiation or sunlight.

Treatment aims to relieve symptoms associated with skin allergy. Treatment such as topical medication is common. Examples of common ones are topical steroids, anti-inflammatory agents and emollients such as cream and lotion. Patients may receive oral medication such as oral antihistamines to down the allergic reaction. Ensuring the skin is well moisturised can help ease the symptoms. Patients need to avoid scratching as it may worsen the already skin rash. In fact, it can lead to infection of the skin. Avoidance of skin to the UV rays and possible sunburn can further fasten the healing process. Ask the dermatologist if the patient is still unsure of what could be causing continuous skin allergy symptoms.

One of the drugs used to treat skin allergy is Telfast. Telfast contains fexofenadine hydrochloride, a non-drowsy antihistamine. This makes it favourable for many people as it typically does not cause drowsiness or sleepiness. It is important for patients suspected with skin allergy to take this medicine as instructed by doctors and it is best for patients with symptoms suspected of an allergy to get proper diagnosis from a doctor.

Telfast is recommended to be used in people aged 12 and older. Telfast can be used for everyone except for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. It is better for pregnant and breastfeeding women to discuss with their healthcare provider before taking Telfast or even any medicine. This is important to prevent any possible danger that may harm their life and the baby. Telfast is best used at the same time of the day.  This will help patients to make sure that they are taking it at regular intervals. Taking Telfast regularly helps to maximise the drug’s effectiveness.  This medicine should not be discontinued if a doctor does not advise it. Always take this medicine according to the dose and frequency stated by the doctor.

Telfast, just as with any other medicine, does have potential side effects. Fret not, side effects are usually mild and rare. Common side effects reported are drowsiness, dizziness, headache nausea. If a patient is taking other medicine to treat stomach issues such as antacid that contains magnesium or aluminium, Telfast effectivity may be compromised. Thus, it is advisable for those planning to take antacid with Telfast, to take antacid at least 15 minutes before or after taking Telfast. The best time to take Telfast and antacid is to leave a 2 hours gap in between the two medicines. Patients with kidney issues should notify their healthcare provider. This allows doctors to make adjustments aiming to avoid further kidney complications.

In essence, skin allergy is mediated by the immune system. Patients may find symptoms of great discomfort. Medications such as Telfast can help ease symptoms. It is best to get checked by a doctor or dermatologist if skin allergy persists despite using medication.
