Junk 101: What You Need to Know About Junk
Junk items are materials that are worthless and destined for throwing away. But there are definitions for this term that are rarely used and yet essential to understand. Aside from the usual meaning of junk, such as garbage, trash, and debris, there are interesting facts that you may find useful in the future. It ranges from the ordinary waste produced at home or offices to the electronic trash that you may encounter in electronic files. Knowing this information will undoubtedly flex your vocabulary and train you to open your mind to new ideas.
Unhealthy foods
The foods that are quick and easy to eat but with low nutritional value are called junk foods. The term was first used in 1972 to best describe the kinds of foods with a high amount of sugar, fat, salt, and calories. They come in packs of processed foods that are prepared to look appealing and enjoyable to eat. The purpose of coining the term junk with food is to remind the public of the consequences of frequent consumption of unhealthy foods. Among them are chronic health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. But even if some researchers prove that eating these kinds of foods is somehow addictive, no law prohibits the production and selling of junk foods.
Space debris
Space debris, or also called space junk, is defined as human-made objects in space that are no longer functioning. These materials are the fragments of disintegration and collision that are present in the Earth’s orbit. Space junk has been accumulating since October 4, 1957, when the first human-made satellite escaped the Earth’s gravitational pull. Although space junk does not pose an actual threat to the planet, it can cause the loss of millions of dollars spent on satellites that are prone to more collisions. Space also has its way to clean itself due to its strange orbital properties.
Computer files
Junk can also be found in computers. With regular use, the hard drive that stores files also creates thousands of temporary files known as junk files. They came from the process of installation of programs and when those programs are running. If a computer user is not aware of these garbage files, the hard disk may be filled with data that is no longer needed, or is complete trash. Decluttering or erasing these files is possible, and it can result in better performance of the computer.
Day-to-day junk
The day-to-day junk items are the most common of all waste. They may come from houses, offices, and industrial sources. Some scraps are designed to reuse and recycle, while others are subject to proper treatment and disposal. Paper, boxes, and plastics are the regularly produced dry junk, and kitchen waste and food leftovers are wet waste. There are ways to deal with the collecting, sorting, hauling, and disposing of everyday scraps, and one of them is by hiring a company dealing with junk removal in Washington DC.
