Best Things To Do In Lake Toba, The Heart of North Sumatra

Lake Toba is located in the center of North Sumatra, it is the largest lake in Indonesia and Southeast Asia and the largest volcanic lake in the world, with an area of ​​more than 1,100 square kilometers. Woof! But wait, there’s more. It is also one of the deepest lakes in the world with around 500 meters deep.

Ironically, Lake Toba was formed naturally by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Toba some 70,000 years ago. Today, the crater of Lake Toba is one of the 19 geoparks in Indonesia, with a wide variety of flora and fauna and a rich ethnic heritage, especially the Batak ethnic group. There are seven rulers around Lake Toba-Samosir, Toba Samosir, West Malongong, North Tapanuli, Karo, Dari, and Hongbang Hasongdutan.

1.     Samosir Island

Samosir Island is a volcanic island, almost the same size as Singapore, located in the middle of Lake Toba. Thousands of years ago, the island recovered from its destruction after the devastating eruption of Mount Toba. It is currently the largest island in the world and also one of the largest lake islands in the world. Six of the nine areas of Samosir Regency are located on Samosir Island. Samosir Island can be reached by ferry from the port of Parapt to the east of the island, especially to Tuktuk, Tomok, and Ambarita. The island is connected to the western mainland through Pangururan on the island and Tele on the mainland.

The island not only offers natural attractions and spectacular landscapes, but it is also a place steeped in culture and history because it is the core of The Batak’s heritage, especially Toba Batak. These are some of the tourist attractions on Samosir Island.

2.     Tomok Village

Here you can find the Batak Museum and the tomb of King Sidabutar, who is said to have been the first person to set foot on the island. Tomok is also a place where you can buy souvenirs like Batak products and food.

3.     Ambarita Village

The most popular attraction here is the ancient village, Huta Siallagan. After entering the narrow stone entrance passage, a row of traditional Toba Batak houses will greet you on your left, including the former residence of King Siallagan. Siallagans are the direct descendants of King Batak through King Nembaton. In addition to the traditional houses, other interesting sights you can notice are the two sets of stone chairs and tables: the stone for some kind of the assembly point and the trial. When you are here, you will also meet the current chief Gading J. Siallagan, a descendant of King Siallagan. If you like to dance, you can also participate in Sigale-gale (puppet)  dance with puppets too. Lastly, do not forget to stop by at the local souvenirs shop at this village!

  1. Tuktuk Village

This village is the most developed place on the island and is mainly functional for tourism purposes. It is close to the towns of Tomok and Ambarita. Here you will find most of the accommodations like hotels and lodges and catering service. There are also beaches near the town. Such as Simanindo Village, Putih Parbaba Beach, Pasir Putih Beach, Hot Springs Rianiate, Pusuk Buhit Mountain, Sidihoni Lake, etc.

5.     Huta Ginjang

Huta Ginjang is located at an altitude of more than 1,500 meters above sea level and is one of the best places to see Lake Toba. The lookout is located on the southern shore of Lake Toba. The idyllic scenery of the hills and the calm waters of the vast lakes will certainly amaze you. In the right season, the site becomes the starting point for paragliding and other air sports.
