Bindlestiff Studio (185 Sixth St.) kicked-off the inaugural season in its revamped location on 6th & Howard this year. The new space continues to hold ground as the only permanent, community-based performing arts venue in the nation dedicated to showcasing Filipino artists.
The latest production, Death of a Player, is presented by Pinays Maintaining Sisterhood Through Art (PMSTA) or PMSThruArt, which I just love in concept and quip. The show runs through this Saturday, October 29th and beautifully balances comedy, music and art into six one-act performances. It explores issues of sexual oppression and exploitation, love and loss, and begs the question of whether one must die to fully live.
I especially enjoyed “Died at 25” starring Andrea Almario and written by sister Aureen Almario. The performance, which explored the concept of dying early and hearing your own eulogies at the peak of one’s greatness, was honest and hilarious. Other great performances included Tonilyn Sideco and Ava Tong’s well-played piece about moving on from a lost lover. My favorite piece of the night though, had to be the zombie apocalypse finale which featured Maggie Suarez-Calixton who doubled as the show’s producer; simply put it was fabulously hysterical.
