Who Has The Cutest Dog in South of Market? Vote Here.

by Live SoMa

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend. Man, it went by fast.

The Cutest Dog in SOMA Photo Contest Submission Deadline came and went on Friday night, and below, you will find all of the entries we received. Unfortunately, I don’t feel that we received enough Costume entries to make a real competition out of it, so we’ll take a look at the prizes we’ve received and we’ll see if we can add a runner-up in the Reader’s Choice Category.

Take a look at the entries and place your vote below. We have decided not to share the results until the end of the contest.

Since this is a short week, we’ve decided to extend the voting until September 16th at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be announced the following week.

Good luck to everyone who submitted. There are some pretty cute pooches in this neighborhood!

UPDATE on September 13th:

So apparently the stack of photos below has done wonders with our load time due to the popularity of the contest (not a bad problem to have, I suppose). Therefore, I have added all of the photos into a single slideshow right here. The dog information is below, the photos are still in order, and hopefully everyone still has an opportunity to vote as we still have a few more days with the poll.

1. Sophia

Sophia is a 3 year old, 4 pound Maltese and she’s as cute as a button.  On Saturdays we work at Furry Tales, a dog store in SOMA on King Street, where I help with dog grooming and Sophia greets customers in the store.  She is very cuddly and is most happy when she is curled up on my lap or hanging out with her brother Valentino, my Persian cat.

This is a picture of her sitting on the counter at Furry Tales modeling a 4th of July dress.

2.Izzie

Neighborhood: Mission Bay (King St.)
Location: Grass/Park in front of Java House

3. Gir

I am not kidding when I say that nearly every day, some stranger (usually a woman) will comment on how pretty he is when we are walking around the neighborhood or at nearby parks.  This picture was taken in the back of my car with an iPhone as we were parked on Howard, and he’s normally pretty shy, but he just happened to be hamming it up at the moment so it looks like a professional glamour shot.

.

4.Kirby

Kirby moved here a year ago from Georgia and has been making his mark ever since.  Known as the barkiest beagle this side of Market, he loves to chase (and occasionally catch) gophers in parks.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

5. Sasha

Sasha moved here with us in November 2009 and has lived in SOMA this whole time with us.  She loves to run with me along the Embarcadero and chase seagulls.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

6. Bamboo

We would like to enter Bamboo, our little Frenchie, into the contest.  He came to us as a rescue, but is as much a part of the family as if he has been with us all his life.  He loves spending time walking Mission Creek Park and AT&T Park, chewing on his Nylabone and just hanging out between his daddies.  I am sure you will agree he is a cute little bugger!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

7. Nya

Nya is a 16-month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi.  She goes to work with me a couple days a week, and gets to play with the other office dogs.  She loves to go to Mission Creek Park.

8. John Parker

John Parker is our beloved three-year old rescue. Consensus is he’s a Schnoodle. Certainly part Poodle. One can see the Schnauzer in him… but it’s hard to ignore that Shih Tzu underbite…. Hard to say definitively what mix he is, but we can tell you without any doubt that he’s 100% made of love.

As if it wasn’t enough to simply see the empirical evidence, or to believe us when we tell you “He’s the cutest dog in SOMA, paws down!” we can offer the testimonials of countless people on the street between our doorstep and the 4th & King Caltrain station who stop us regularly to coo at the little guy, and compliment his appearance and his easy-going demeanor. He toddles around town with us with a song is his doggie heart that sings to strangers on the street. We watched in amazement as he’s turned bad afternoons into good ones for people outside of CBS Interactive. More than once just looking into his big, brown eyes has quieted down a frat boy outside of 21st Amendment.

His likes:
• Sitting in our window at 199 New Montgomery, watching the AAU students across the street sullenly smoking bummed cigarettes.
• The (now under vicious backhoe attack) patches of grass at the 24-Hour Fitness plaza on 2nd Street.
• Stuffed (toy) ducks.
• Fuzz.

His dislikes:
• Doorbells.
• Off-leash dogs in South Park.
• Alto saxophones.
• Rachel on “Big Brother.”

In this photo, John Parker is relaxing in the ivy outside of Yerba Buena Gardens. Please note: he stayed off their grass, as he’s a good boy who follows the Yerba Buena Gardens “No Dogs Allowed” rules.

9. Coco

Coco is loveable, entertaining, and always wants to be the life of the show.  She doesn’t know a stranger and loves to be kissed, cuddled, and fussed with!  She is particularly fond of our Embarcadero walks where she can strut her stuff!  She is one cutie pie toy Poodle (at least we think so).

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

10. Buddy

Buddy is a 2.5 year old Miniature Dachshund who lives in South Beach. What is not to love about this adorable long & low?

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

11. Roscoe

Roscoe, the aussie shepherd/american shepherd mix, left his brother and sister puppies in Petaluma at the age of 8 weeks to join his human master, for a new life and adventures in SOMA.  Living near 3rd and Brannan, Roscoe was first afraid of the noisy baseball crowds, but quickly made lots of friends.  He’s officially the cutest dog at [his owner's work] on King Street.  He’s despised by the people that work at the Shell Gas Station (Roscoe’s favorite pee spot).  And he’s known by many, as the dog that helps [his owner] with his laundry (a trick he does for treats).  In his spare time, Roscoe likes to video g-chat with [his owner's] parents in Hong Kong.  He’s still a 4 month old puppy, so his proportions aren’t right yet.  But don’t make fun of his oversized ears.  He’s sensitive about it.

.

12. Eva

From her adorable, cow-like black and white markings to her soulful eyes and sweet personality, Eva turns heads and inspires happiness wherever she goes. She cannot walk two feet from our loft without capturing the attention of passersby. Everyone – Costco shoppers, clubgoers, people walking dogs of their own, distracted drivers – smile when they see her and always say the same thing: “WOW! She is the CUTEST dog!” She has almost caused traffic accidents on a number of occasions. We learned of this contest from our neighbors in the building, who insisted that we enter her.

The attached picture was taken on the corner of Sheridan alley and 10th St.  Like us, she has a thing for for graffiti sidewalk art and koi ponds.

.

13. Lola

I have attached a picture of our 11 year old chihuahua, Lola, who is without question the cutest dog in all of SOMA!!
Lola is a real champ and fighter.  She was close to death last year after suffering a cervical neck injury, and was paralyzed for several  months, but through sheer determination and stubbornness, she learned to walk again.  This picture was taken about 6 months ago, shortly after she started walking again and you can just see the joy in her eyes.  We plan to be frequent visitors to the dog park once it opens.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

14. Sadie Chi

Sadie is a 10-year old rescue chihuahua mix originally from Tulare County.  Likes: fog, occasional personal space, and cheese.  Dislikes:  riding in cars, houseflies, and smoke alarms that chirp when the battery is running low.

In this photo, Sadie gives her best snaggle-toothed smile.  She’s covered in shadows cast by fence metalwork created by Irène Pijoan at Victoria Manalo Draves Park at Folsom and Sherman Streets.

.

15. Gobi

Here’s a photo of our little chihuahua /yorkie mutt mix, Gobi. He is approximately two years old, he was a rescue dog, and and is absolutely by far the cutest dog in SoMa!!!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

16. Bullet

I am entering Bullet into the cutest dog contest. I think that Bullet is the cutest dog in SOMA, but then I may be bias. Bullet is a siberian husky. He is almost all white. He is 7 years old. This picture is taken at Philz coffee on Berry and 4th. He loves to sit at the wicker chair at Philz and hang out. I swear Bullet thinks he’s human, and doesnt know that he’s a dog. We frequent all the SOMA/Mission Bay establishments. The owner of Bar Basic said that I can take him there on quiet nights. And he used to come with me to Safeway, but we cant do that anymore.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

17. Fanny

Fanny is an 11 year old French Bulldog. I think she is the cutest because she has one of the most expressive faces – and displays more emotion than many people I know.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

18. Pepper

Here’s a photo of our pup named Pepper highlighting her mohawk and a bandaged paw.  She ripped off her dewclaw and is shown here in recovery.  She is back to her chipper self and ready for an award ceremony.

Pepper & her family live near 3rd & Townsend.  Pepper turns heads all over South Beach & South Park, sometimes riding in her little sister’s classic pram.  Yes, we have an actual baby.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

19. Mr. Magoo

This is Mr. Magoo, who lives on Folsom Street in SOMA. Why is he the cutest?  Why is the sky blue?

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

20. Thumper

This is Thumper!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

21. Dax

Dax is a 4 year old Mini Dachshund who lives in South Beach. What can I say…he’s a rescue.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

22. Fletch

This is Fletch, hanging outside Public House/Willie Mays Plaza. He lives near 5th & Bryant. Fletch is a Great Pyrenees (mix?) rescued from the Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees rescue. He’s still a pup at 3, and has been living in SOMA since his rescue (at 18 months). He lives with his sister Zoe, an Akbash also rescued from Sierra Pacific.

Fletch is often mistaken for a  polar bear lumbering around South of Market.. He’s a furry ball of love who makes everyone smile. And he must be the cutest; all the other dogs — and their people — always run up to meet him!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

23. Zoe

This is Zoe. She’s an Akbash rescued from Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Rescue (the northern California rescue organization for
large, white, and usually fluffy dogs). She’s small for an Akbash, weighing in at only 80 lbs. Her size doesn’t slow her down, though.
She has no problem knocking down her 120lb brother in an impromptu wrestling match.

Zoe had a rough start to life but has adapted and turned into a complete lovebug. She’s insanely aware of her surroundings, and wriggles with excitement whenever she sees a friend – even from a block away!

24. Fozzie Bear

I’m Fozzie Bear! Here’s a picture of me for your contest taken South of Market on the EmBARKadero not far from the Delancy Street Restaurant.  You can see the T-Third tracks behind me.

In addition to being the offspring of a long line of champions, hence my “Titanic” inspired noble stance, I have a smiling face, cute bouncy, poodle-y walk and folks love to stop and talk to me and pet me.  I can High Five, shake hands, speak on command, as well as the usual doggie sit/stay/lie down commands.  I love to dance on my hind legs!  You can often find me taking my daily walk around AT&T park where I love to spend time with Rene who guards the gate on the West side as part of my regular walks around mission creek.  Go Giants!

I’m an old friend of Pawtrero as their owners got my mom to feed me raw food and it’s been really good for me and it’s where I get my baths after running on the beach at Crissy field.  I know how to find my own way from South Park to Pawtrero, but mom makes me wait at the lights.  Also Bernie’s grooming, which is about to move into the space next to Pawtrero is my groomer, she is a wonderful lady that I get very excited to visit!   My pet mom has lived in the SOMA neighborhood and has also worked here for 8 years now.  She loves your site!

Whew.  Typing without opposable thumbs is HARD.  So that’s all for now.  Hope you’ll consider me for cutest SOMA dog!

Woof!

25. Taj

Attached is Taj, he lives on 3rd and Folsom and is 4 years old French Bulldog.  This picture is of him walking in front of the Contemporary Jewish Museum.  He likes to frequent Whole Foods and Yerba Buena gardens to watch and meet people.  He has the talent of saying ‘I love you’ as seen on you tube -talking dog, Taj.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

26. Charlie

My name is Charlie and I am going for the sympathy vote.  I am 16 1/2 years old, practically blind and deaf.  I live in the heart of SOMA on Harrison Street.  In my younger days, I was known as an escape artist but am a bit slower these days.  My favorite things to do are to leave pee puddles in the middle of the kitchen and make people trip.

27. Amicus Aparagus Skittles Cernovich

This is Amicus Aparagus Skittles Chernovich. Here’s a link to his very own Facebook Page.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

28. Cairo

Cairo the basenji in SoMa as a wee pup, on the pier near the ballpark, looking at his lord & master.

Cairo’s den is near 9th & Bryant.  Cairo has spent 15 human years in SoMa, in those 120 dog years he’s seen a lot of change, but he’s not complaining.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

29. Harley

This is Harley. She loves saying hello to people, wiggling like crazy on the approach, and even people who don’t usually warm to small dogs love her. On walks to the Contemporary Jewish Museum or to Pier 14, she often makes people smile from a block away, and it’s not uncommon to hear as they pass, “that’s the cutest dog I’ve ever seen.” She knows a bunch of tricks and likes to play fetch with a bottlecap.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

30. Olivia

Why my dog is the cutest dog in SOMA: On top of being irresistibly cute, Olivia enjoys Saturday morning walks to the farmers market, the smells and sights of the grass patch in front of AT&T park, gourmet dog treats from South Paw, sniffing butts in dog park at the Beacon and Marlowe burgers.  A true city dog, Olivia prefers relieving herself on SOMA pavement rather than grass.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

31. Brillo

This is Brillo, a miniature poodle in her Beach Blanket Babylon outfit. Val Diamond wore the San Francisco skyline on her head, Brillo’s head is too small, so it’s on get back. The GG Bridge is on the back.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

32. Ube, the Pug

Ube is our eight-month-old fawn pug male (born Dec.1 , 2010). Ube (“ooh-bay”, named after the purple yam flavor at Mitchell’s Ice Cream) lives in the heart of SoMa. He is a fluffy pug with a striking, symmetrical face, an expressive “whipped cream” curled tail and the best personality (nice to people and other dogs) of any dog we’ve seen in the neighborhood.

This picture was taken at South Park; one of his favorite haunts.  He also likes the Embarcadero Waterfront in front of Carmen’s all the way down to AT&T Park, Pawtrero and the Berry Street Dog Park at Mission Creek.

Ube also has his own Facebook page.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

33. Cashew

Here’s a photo of my adorable dog Cashew. Cashew is almost 5 months old, and often frequents shops in the South Beach area (his favorite is Philz since they always give him treats!) He also loves Julia at Furry Paws and Pawtrero. It is often difficult to walk Cashew, since we get stopped so often since he is so adorable. He is also extremely well behaved and welcomes belly rubs by neighborhood strangers ;)

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

.

34. Tweek

Tweek is a 6 year-old male Chihuahua (who might be under the impression that he is a Rottweiler). He rules the roost, which is why he likes to always be at the highest possible elevation. The picture I have attached is him conquering Mount Matthew…also known as my visiting little brother.
