An Inside Look at Chrome on Fourth Street
Live SoMa | Jul 12, 2011 | Comments 26

We’ve officially picked a winner from the Comment Stream below! Thanks to everyone who entered, and a special thanks to the good people at Chrome who are graciously donating a Falcon Bag to the cause.
The winner of the Chrome Falcon Bag Giveaway is Kathy D.!
Kathy D., if someone has not reached out to you about claiming your bag, they will be shortly (assuming the email you provided was accurate).
For everyone else, I wish we had a dozen bags to give away, or even one for each person who entered, but don’t worry. We hope to have other great contests in the not too distant future, including our upcoming Cutest Dog in SOMA Photo Contest, which will pit each of your best friends against one another for the exclusive title; so start primping your pups!
In the meantime, stop in at Chrome (580 Fourth St.) and check out some of their cool products.

Photos & Interview By Seema
.For over 16 years, Chrome (580 Fourth St.) has been manufacturing functional, durable messenger bags. A big hit amongst messenger bikers and commuters, these bags can be found all over San Francisco. Last week, I met with Corinne (Chrome’s PR specialist) at Chrome’s head office in SoMa to get the low down on the bag brand:
.
Where are the bags made?
Most bags are made in our main factory in Chico, California, but Heritage buckle bags in the small Mini Metro and medium Citizen sizes can also be customized with quick turnaround by in house sewing experts in each Chrome shop.
Michael Pablo is our SF in-store sewing expert and Chrome Customs bag maker. He can complete bags in as little as 2 hours and also works on repairs since Chrome bags are guaranteed for life!
.
How long have you been at this location in SoMa?
We’ve been in our 4th street location for about 4 years now. Our last location was a warehouse right near Brainwash on Folsom @ 7th. The more industrial, urban warehouse feel works well for us. Plus, the abundance of thriving creative and tech industries, as well as city dwellers and SoMa characters allow for plenty of inspiration.
.
Do you offer events to the community?
We just started our Third Thursdays concert series where each shop hosts a monthly event with local bands, free entry and free beer. It happens on the third Thursday of every month at the Chrome shops and is super fun! We also host occasional pop up art galleries, usually featuring artists who are involved in our Artist Tee Series (the last being TAK which you can check out online or in stores), ArtCrank, movie premieres, and check points on alleycat races. Facebook and our e-newsletter are the easiest ways to stay in the know on all the fun stuff.
.
Do you have periodic sample sales or holiday sales that customers should know of?
We have one annual sale and a couple of sample sales throughout the year. Again, Facebook and/or our e-newsletter are the easy ways of getting in on the inside scoop.
.
Do you offer discounts for cyclists or any clubs?
Absolutely, community is everything and they make up a large portion of our community. We like to support them however possible. We host messenger appreciation events, offer Pro Deals to city messengers and certain bike clubs, teams, etc.
.
What is Chrome’s most popular bag?
The Citizen Heritage buckle bag, usually in black/red.
