A Friendly Neighborhood Poll for District 6 Supervisor…

This past Saturday marked exactly one month until Election Day, November 2nd. That means it’s time to start to really think about who you might vote for.

For months we’ve endured non-answers, door hangings, mass mailings and muck-rakings about many (if not all) of the Candidates and their positions on everything. So where does that leave us?

Hopefully you’re strongly considering your vote based on any number of reasons. Hopefully, your reasons have absolutely nothing to do with which Candidate likes what music, and EVERYTHING to do with what they will bring in terms of help to this diverse district.

Personally, I’m still very much undecided with one month to go. I tend to have trouble sussing through political B.S. to determine who the best Candidate is. I’ve sat through a number of forums, listened to their rhetoric, and frankly, I like some of what everyone says. I also don’t like some of what everyone says.

Either way, what we’ve done this election is important for the future of San Francisco. Not so much because of what has been said, but because of the fact that it has been documented like never before. I believe it was Bluoz who mentioned to me this little tidbit of information: “the history of the local politics plays a big part in todays elections… the archives of today probably will affect the elections in 2014.”

For some reason, that has stuck with me. I am curious to see who wins in November, and how they do over their term. I’m also curious to see what happens in the future. Who changes their tune in an effort to win, who stays constant and anything else.

I’ve come across all sorts of ‘endorsements’ and ‘predictions’ on this race. My favorite (not because of what he says, but how he says it) was this comment by H. Brown over at Fog City:

As a political fan with a backstage pass I’ve watched hundreds of these candidates and you know what the rarest thing you see is?

A second candidacy. The norm is that losing one of these things in which you’ve been treated as a ‘front-runner’ is enough to kill their desire for public office.

I want to bet you a few things.

First, Elaine Zamora will move from the most dangerous block in the Tenderloin within a month after her loss.

Second, if Jane Kim loses (she’s working hard on itl) she’ll leave SF and take a job in D.C..

Third, Debra Walker will lose badly and concentrate on serving on the D Triple C until she’s 100 years old. She’ll never run for any higher office.

Fourth, Theresa Sparks will finish no higher than 5th place and never run for public office again. On the up side, she’ll continue to be given jobs by Downtown in payment for her work siphoning off votes from the Progressive Community in her work with Alice B. Toklas and so forth.

Fifth, Jim Meko will win the election in what will be (to everyone but me) a tremendous upset and serve 8 solid years as the reasoned voice of D-6.

And, Giants will win the pennant.

As sarcastic as it is, if his prediction of who wins and who loses were correct, I could totally see the other predictions happening. There’s been a lot of public discussion about who the frontrunners are (usually Kim and Walker), and who moved into the District ‘coincidentally close’ to the cutoff for candidacy. Only one person can win, and there are a number of Candidates who conveniently relocated to the District in recent months (and maybe years). So what if they lose? Do they stay in the District or pack up their collective sh%t and get out of dodge?

Whatever happens, this month is going to be interesting from the District 6 Supervisor stance. I never thought I would care about Local Politics, but after spending the past year and a half wandering around the neighborhood to build LiveSOMA, I can honestly say that whoever wins has their work cut out for them. I wouldn’t want the job that all of these folks are working so hard for, but it’s a necessary job and somebody’s gotta do it.

I just hope that somebody has the District’s best intentions in mind. Otherwise, we’ll be there on the back end of their term with well documented comments and opinions to display all that has been said and ‘promised’ so many times over the past few months. Whoever is elected… please remember that if not anything else.

  1. Good find !
Who set up the poll ? Theresa’s team ?
She comes up with over %30 on the poll ?
At any rate, the D6 race is fascinating !
Incidently, at least 2 candidates are low income D6 residents, so no matter how many months (or years) they maintained residency in D6, they definitely know what they’re talking about !

  2. Live SoMa says:

I assure you that no Candidates were involved in this poll. Were just asking our readers. Its rather interesting to see who our readers like, actually.

  3. so I reckon that Theresa and Debra’s supporters are your top readers ?
that is what the poll saga suggests anyway…

  4. This is poorly designed survey as it allows for multiple casting of votes by the same user. Thus, a high polling candidate only reveals that this candidate’s volunteers were motivated to repeatedly refresh their browser screen and resubmit their vote. It says nothing about the reality of the situation in which seven top candidates are more or less closely tied. I believe these 7 top candidates are, listed alphabetically are:
    1. Glendon “Anna Conda” Hyde
    2. James Keys
    3. Jane Kim
    4. Jim Meko
    5. Debra Walker
    6. Theresa Sparks
    7. Debra Walker
In the last District 6 election, Chris Daly only won by around 1200 votes with just one main competitor. This time, I believe that whoever wins will only enjoy a margin of victory of a couple of hundred votes at best.

  5. LiveSOMA says:

    David,

That is not true. If you place a vote and refresh, the poll lets you vote again, but it does not count your vote again. Repeat voting is blocked (and has been the whole time). Just try it and you will see that the percentage does not change when you vote twice, but it changes the first time that you vote.

I can tell from the traffic that someone had their minions directed towards the poll, which directly correlates to the high amount of votes. There was no direct link that everybody arrived at the poll through, but they all managed to find that specific page pretty easy. So from what I can tell, yes, Walker and Sparks had supporters direct people to the poll. But isn’t that what campaigning is about? Convincing your supporters to vote for you?

Also, this is not a good representation of who will likely win, you are right. But that’s more because you can never tell who reads or knows about LiveSOMA versus who knows about the election itself and will actually vote. For instance, if Meko pushed his supporters to come and vote on this ‘popularity’ poll, maybe he would be up there too.

In the grand scheme, this poll doesn’t matter. The poll that does is on November 2nd, and the candidates will have to do it then if they want to win the Supervisor Race. If this poll is any indication, Sparks and Walker have a lot of supporters who will vote when told. The poll doesn’t show whether they are District 6 Residents though.

Ultimately, are they going to determine the next D6 Supervisor off of this poll? No. But it is a good way (for me) to determine where people’s heads are at.

I agree with Mesha, this is an interesting race. It’s even more interesting because so many people have been so outspoken about who they view as the favorites. But nobody will know the favorites until November 2nd because nobody has actually taken any sort of poll like they do in bigger races. The only basis people seem to be using is the amount of funding that a Candidate has acquired, which (I believe) we have disproven as an actual factor right here at LiveSOMA. Case in point… more people have voted for ‘Not Voting’ than have voted for “top candidate” Elaine Zamora.

  6. Live SoMa says:

I’ll also point out that one person added an “other” vote, saying “I don’t live in District 6, but I support Debra Walker.” There is no way of telling how many other people voted for anyone even though they can’t vote in the actual election.

  7. Anna Conda says:

I think people should relax. This is supposed to be a friendly poll remember! This is not the election day results so just have some fun. I have encouraged my supporters to vote but I am not going crazy over the results by any means. Yesterday I was at 60% and today 6%. Am I worried. Heck no. It’s important not to take everything as a matter of life or death. Competitive polls? Too silly be taken seriously.
David I do admire your fight though! Thats why I’m glad you have offered help to so many of the candidates.
    Anna Conda

  8. Cecil says:

I just tried and voted multiple times. So this shows that Sparks and Walker just spent the whole day getting people to vote in a non-scientific poll. Great use of resources…bet you Keyes is actually out there doing the work.

  9. LiveSOMA says:

    Cecil,
Once again, you can vote multiple times, but IT DOES NOT AFFECT the poll. You get ONE vote that counts. The poll will allow you to enter a second vote, but it DOES NOT add to the votes after your first vote.

    Thanks,
    LiveSOMA

  10. Thanks LiveSOMA for posting this poll. It has been a little diversion from the workday. As a District 6 resident and Sparks supporter I got this link from a friend. My family and I are very excited about the outcome of this race, it seems to be anyones game and it will definitely set the tone for future elections in D6. I personally think Theresa will win, but then again I am biased because I think highly of her and her ability to play well with others.

    My Picks:
    1. Theresa Sparks
    2. Glendon “Anna Conda” Hyde
    3. Debra Walker

Who knows, maybe the Fog City Journal is right, there is always a first time for everything, lol.

    Thanks for the diversion…
    Marty

  11. Robert Mansfield says:

I learned of the poll through a mailing from Dean Clark (not sure how I got on that list). So, as for minions manipulating, that doesn’t appear to be working for Dean. I do, however, think this clearly reflects to two front-runners (Theresa is my choice) and I appreciate the ‘friendly’ comment from Glendon Hyde.

  12. Annaconda is right !

and Kudos to David Eliott, Michael Nulty, Elihu Hernandez and Tony De Renzo for their sensational photo coverage on the D6 race and forums !

  13. Paul Currier says:

I bet His Majesty H Rapp Willy Brown has been voting over and over all day. That’s the Democratic Party Deal, correct? Vote early, often and for Brown! (smile)

  14. I feel bad for Elaine Zamora.
For days now her vote count remains at one.
    Come on people.
Will not someone give her at least one more vote?
    Please.

  15. Patrick says:

You can only vote once for yourself.
