Where Can You Watch World Cup Action in SOMA?

Update from June 11th:

And the locations continue to grow…

I received an email from a LiveSOMA reader named Liz, who wanted to inform me that there will be a FREE Public Showing of the United States’ Opening Round match-up against England tomorrow morning at AT&T Park. The gates will open at 10 a.m. and the game starts at 11:30. It will be broadcast on the HD Centerfield Scoreboard as well as on televisions all around the ballpark (NOTE: The game will also overlap with the Plate to Plate 5K Race and Giant Race Half Marathon). Admission is FREE and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Here’s an article that she shared with me about general World Cup Coverage around the City. It mentions Mijitas and the Public House (home of the cheapest beer in Major League Baseball!), and how they’ll have a special ‘World Cup Tortas Menu’. It also mentions O’Neills Irish Pub and Perry’s Embarcadero as World Cup Viewing Destinations.

In addition, Liz informed me that there will also be a Live Screen set up at Civic Center that will broadcast World Cup Coverage. Not technically in SOMA, but it’s close enough, and I appreciate the feedback as always! A big ‘Thanks’ to Liz for her contributions!

Original Post from June 11th:

I’ve been receiving a lot of emails and inquiries about where to watch the World Cup in South of Market.

Honestly, I haven’t come across all that many places that have been promoting the World Cup, but there are a few:

Bar Basic
510 Brannan Street
World Cup Schedule @ Bar Basic

Perhaps the most comprehensive coverage of the World Cup in South of Market is at Bar Basic. I don’t know if they’re showing ALL the games (there’s a message on their website asking for special game requests to be emailed to info@basicsf.com, which leads me to believe some of the lesser known games might not be covered without an audience), but the games they are covering range from morning to EARLY morning.

Most of the games in this round are at 11 a.m., but Bar Basic will also be showing two games at 6:30 a.m. (today and tomorrow), as well as tomorrow morning’s Korea Vs. Greece at 4:00 a.m.!

.

The Chieftain Irish Pub
198 Fifth Street

A rather late entry to this list, but The Chieftain Irish Pub has notified me that they will be showing EVERY World Cup Game. Check out their website for the complete schedule. And here’s a link to their food specials this month.

.

Hotel Utah Saloon
500 Fourth Street

According to their Facebook Page, the Hotel Utah Saloon will now be showing World Cup Action:

Confirmed: we ARE showing the World Cup Games! Opening at 6:30 AM with a breakfast menu, we’ve got the projector set up on the stage and the sound piped through the PA for a movie-style experience.

.

Iron Cactus
683 Fourth Street

I don’t have an official schedule of any sort from the Iron Cactus, but they have that mural in their window, AND I happened to walk by this morning around 7 a.m., and it was pretty packed with soccer fans. I’ve sent an inquiry, so I’ll keep you posted.

I’ve now heard back from the folks at the Creamery and Iron Cactus:

The Creamery and The Iron Cactus will be broadcasting all games live at 7:30 am and 11:30 am. Breakfast will be available at both locations. Attached is the new World Cup-focused Iron Cactus menu.

We can accommodate your large group, and are now taking advanced reservations for the outside beer garden and patio equipped with a beautiful screen.

Come cheer on your favorite team, enjoy some breakfast and the sunshine in our beautiful beer garden!

Hope to see you there!

Here is a link to the World Cup-inspired menu they’re referring to.

.

Jillians
101 Fourth Street (in the Metreon)

The manager of Jillians sent me this bracket and let me know that they’ll be open for 7 a.m. games, serving a breakfast menu and providing a “Beers of the World” Promotion. They also have a 60 Foot Screen, so you can get an enlarged view from pretty much anywhere in the bar. I’ve been to Jillians for games a number of times and there’s really no bad place to sit in their very large space.

They’re also running a $250,000 World Cup Bracket Challenge and “great giveaways during each World Cup Game.”
