SFPD Cracking Down on Smash ‘n Grabs

I meant to post this last week, but I got caught up with some other local developments. There was an article in the Examiner a couple of weeks ago about the San Francisco Police Department’s crack-down on auto crimes. More specifically, these crimes plague South of Market and the Embarcadero.

This has been a problem that I’ve noticed more and more over the past couple of months. Every morning, I take my dog for a nice walk, and it’s not unusual for me to see an entire stretch of the street that has 3-5 piles of broken window glass from cars that had been parked there the night before. It’s almost as if the burglar picks one street and somehow manages to go from car to car (to car… and so on) without ever getting interrupted.

Personally, it seems almost inconceivable to me that someone could break into 4 or 5 cars in one row without at least someone seeing what’s going on, but that seems to be what’s going on. I guess residents are too far from the street to hear the sound of glass shattering?

A couple of months ago, I featured a picture that was taken on Harrison Street around 6th or 7th. The photo showed a note that was taped in someone’s car window that was begging any potential burglar to spare the car’s window. Apparently this person has had issues with theft in the past, and he/she was asking the criminal to knock on their door for some money, rather than breaking into the car.

At the time, I thought this was ridiculous, but the more I walked around, the more I realized that there were piles of shattered glass everywhere. Yet another issue that needs to be resolved in this neighborhood. Though you would never know if you looked at the price of real estate and rentals in the area.
