Central Subway Groundbreaking Marks the Beginning of A New Era in SOMA

I attended the Press Conference/Groundbreaking for the new Central Subway Tunnel underneath Route 80 on 4th street this morning. I somehow managed to grab a front row seat which was probably the worst place to snap some photos because of all the flash photography coming from behind me, as well as the fact that all of the speakers were probably distracted as I snapped mine.

In any case, it was a pretty quick press conference despite the fact that they had 11 different speakers. Mayor Gavin Newsom spoke briefly about how this project hopes to jump-start the local economy by creating 37,000 – 43,000 new jobs and will carry 76,000 riders daily between Fourth Street, Moscone Station, Union Square and Chinatown. In addition, it will connect the Mission Bay Community, the new UCSF Campus and Bayview-Hunters Point with downtown.

Newsom added that this project will also help to enhance and preserve the environment by reducing air and noise pollution in surrounding areas and relieving surface congestion on the crowded streets above.

After the quick Press Conference, all of the speakers gathered and posed for the mandatory shovel and dirt photo that says ‘this project is hereby underway,’ and Mayor Newsom was bombarded by cameras and reporters. Here are some of the photos I took of the event, followed by a news clip from ABC:
