SF Mime Troupe Rolls Into Yerba Buena Gardens

Mime TroupeThere was a lot going on this weekend in South of Market. Between the Beach Volleyball Tournament down on the pier to the opening of the Once Upon a Dream exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum, there seemed to be something for everyone. I originally planned to cover almost all of them, but unfortunately I set my goals too high! I did, however, get the chance to check out the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s performance of the Socialist Satire Too Big To Fail. See pictures below the jump…

I’d never seen the Mime Troupe perform, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I heard “mime” I thought of the guys who don’t speak. These mimes speak though. In fact, they speak against the grain that is Capitalism. A message that’s pretty relevant in this day and age where people are beginning to realize that we are all responsible for creating the financial mess we’re in. A message about the Good Earth, and how not everything should be used as a foundation to make money. A message that I would have taken more sincere had they not spent an hour and a half preaching against the evils of money, credit and privatization, only to turn around at the end and stand over you with buckets expecting payment for the ‘free’ show. Oh, and they also didn’t hesitate to point out the t-shirt stand on the side of the stage. My wife and I did put some money in the bucket, I just thought it was a little contradicting.

I found the general economic message about the credit crunch problem in this country to be well done; stories and songs were very entertaining. However, even my liberal blue blood found the concluding message (that we should all revolt against the credit card companies by paying only what we purchased) to be a bit overzealous. The troupe uses the term mime in the ancient sense: to mimic, and it is supposed to be satirical, so perhaps I shouldn’t take it so literally. Overall an interesting display, and I found no problem with the contradiction of asking for donations – someone has to support the arts!
